WHY I CAN’T WAIT FOR MY TRIATHLON TO BE OVER

This triathlon has been a long time coming, in fact it’s been in the works since I completed my very first sprint triathlon 3 years ago. I decided to sign up for it as my big challenge for 2015 because I like to have a new challenge every year. I mean, why not? Challenging yourself to the point of near exhaustion is fun right? Right…

Actually, it IS fun and actually, I’m really looking forward to the event in 10 days so that I can see how far I’ve come. I like to challenge myself because I like the feeling of achievement and triumph when I’ve silenced my own doubts.

At the same time I’m coming to realise that actually I don’t love doing triathlons. No, that’s not right. I love doing triathlons, I’m just not so keen on endurance training. There, I said it. I find it difficult to push myself, I find it boring and I miss doing cardio for fun.

PLAYING TENNIS WITH MARTINA HINGIS AND MAUI JIM

Sometimes there are events that can entice even me out of East London which is how I found myself at The Wimbledon Club on the middle Sunday of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. Yep, my first time at Wimbledon and I was going to not only meet Martina Hingis but also get the opportunity to go through a clinic with her and learn some of her tricks. Wow.

I met some of the other lovely blogger girls outside the station and we all piled into taxis over to The Wimbledon Club where we were welcomed by the Maui Jim team and their lovely sunglasses.

STAYING ACTIVE ON HOLIDAY

Summer holidays… For me that phrase conjures up thoughts of ice cream, pizza, sunburn, lying on the beach and reading every book I can get my hands on. But that was before I got fit and also before I realised I was going on a week’s holiday only three weeks before my first ever Olympic distance triathlon.

It meant that I had a specific training plan to follow during the week but it also helped that my motivation levels were through the roof because I couldn’t wait to explore Nice in a different (and sweaty) way.

Here are my tips on keeping active on holiday to ensure you don’t fall too far off the training wagon:

1) Get up and out early

You’ll beat the worst of the heat but it also means that you then have the rest of the day to relax and explore with whoever you’re away with. Just remember to sneak out quietly if they’re having a lie in..

COOLING OFF WITH AQUAPHYSICAL

When the lovely Lucy and Rachel from the Privee Project invited me down to the launch of Aquaphysical on the hottest day in the UK for 9 years I jumped at the chance, obviously.

I mean, exercising on big inflatable boards in the Serpentine Lido with the potential for ‘accidentally’ falling into the refreshing water sounds pretty good right? Also, it gave me a good push to fit in a fartlek cycle training session (ie cycling through London from Hackney to Knightsbridge in rush hour. Shout out to the 2 taxis that nearly ended me. Nice one).

All I knew about Aquaphysical before the event was a few images on Instagram which showed what looked like floating mattresses in a swimming pool with people standing on top of them. When I turned up at the lido it was actually way cooler than that.

THE SHAME ABOUT BODY SHAMING

In this world of selfies, social media and instagram filters it seems that every day there is a new story of online bullying going too far with horrible consequences. Having recently been the recipient of some nasty online body shaming I wanted to explore my thoughts on it and see what you all think.

A couple of weeks ago this blog post of mine went viral, you might have seen it on the Daily Mail, Eonline, Buzzfeed or Yahoo amongst many other places. The key image that most sites decided to feature was this one unsurprisingly:

LADIES WHAT CRUNCH AND BRUNCH

The other day I ventured outside of my usual territory and it wasn’t as scary as I thought it might be! I was invited down to try out Core Collective, a new gym in Kensginton that promises no commitment with no membership fees, no sign-up charge and no contract, you just book in and workout.

When I first got there I walked past the gym because on the street it looks like a welcoming and relaxing café, not a gym but when I saw a group of nervous looking women I knew I was in the right place. Continue Reading…

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL

London is hot today. And not just in that ‘aw look at the little Londoners thinking it’s hot’ way, it’s actually really hot. I’m sweating just sitting still.

I’m planning on a couple of hour’s of cycling tonight and a yoga class balanced on surfboards so I’ve got some ways below that you can enjoy the heat and still workout. I’ll be using these later!

1) Hydrate hydrate hydrate

I know it’s obvious but you need to be drinking 2 litres of water minimum everyday, even more on days like these and even more if you’re going to be working out on days like these. A 60 minute workout can dehydrate you by 500ml-1litre so make sure you’re putting this back in your body

2) Pay attention to your electrolytes

Electrolytes (potassium, sodium, magensium, calcium) are lost when you sweat so if you sweat heavily through prolonged exercise you might start to experience fatigue, dizziness, nausea, headaches (my most common symptom) and tummy issues. The best thing to do is to add a rehydration tablet to 750ml of water after your workout and sip on it as you recover. Continue Reading…
